The challenges facing India’s children are immense. One in three malnourished children, worldwide lives in India, a sobering reminder of the scale of deprivation. Female adult literacy has improved but still stands at around 65%, leaving millions of women without the empowerment that education brings.

The vulnerability of children is heartbreaking. More than half of India’s children report experiencing one or more forms of sexual abuse—and these are only the cases that come to light. It is estimated that between 300,000 and 500,000 young girls remain trapped in commercial sex work and organized prostitution, their childhoods stolen by exploitation.

Health challenges deepen the crisis. India has approximately 2.4 million people living with HIV, one of the highest burdens globally, with children and women disproportionately affected. Meanwhile, child labor remains entrenched, with India still recording the largest number of working children in the world. Tens of thousands of children are rescued from slavery, debt bondage, and trafficking each year, yet the cycle continues.
